About Molly
Molly Shamess defends adults and youths against criminal charges ranging from murder, kidnapping, sexual assault, and drug trafficking to theft, assault, and mischief. She has appeared before the Provincial Court, Supreme Court, and Court of Appeal for British Columbia, as well as before professional regulatory tribunals and the BC Review Board for clients found not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder. She has a particular interest in Charter litigation challenging police conduct during search or arrest, and in representing young people, clients with mental health issues, and marginalized or vulnerable groups. She completed her articles at Stern Shapray and was called to the bar in 2015, having earlier worked at the Innocence Project at UBC and at the Nidus Personal Planning Resource Centre & Registry. She earned a First-Class Honours BA in History from McGill University in 2010 and her JD from the University of British Columbia in 2013. She is Surrey's Regional Representative for the Criminal Defence Advocacy Society and has lectured on Charter applications for unreasonable delay at the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia.
