About Michael

Michael Oykhman founded Strategic Criminal Defence and has devoted an entire practice to criminal law since a call to the Alberta Bar in 2007. Over 18 years, Michael has personally represented more than 2,500 clients and appeared at every level of court in Alberta, including the Supreme Court of Canada, as well as in Saskatchewan and British Columbia, and is licensed to practice in all three provinces. The caseload runs from summary offences to homicides, large-scale drug prosecutions, multi-million-dollar frauds, and constitutional Charter challenges, with more than 100 reported decisions on CanLII, including the Supreme Court's Goodwin v British Columbia ruling. Michael has mentored more than ten articling students and an equal number of junior lawyers, and has spent over a decade as the senior Criminal Advising Lawyer for Student Legal Assistance at the University of Calgary, teaching there as well as a sessional instructor in the Faculty of Law.
