Matthew Kronby is a partner in Osler's Competition, International Trade and Foreign Investment Group in the Toronto office. He advises on cross-border compliance and the resolution of international disputes under trade agreements, investment treaties and Canadian law, representing private-sector and government clients in negotiations and disputes under frameworks such as the World Trade Organization, the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. He also advises on trade remedy proceedings and on navigating economic sanctions and export control laws. Matthew has led legal teams in WTO panel and appellate body proceedings involving subsidies, dumping, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical barriers and tariffs, and in NAFTA-related investment arbitrations. From 2009 to 2012 he served as Director General of the Trade Law Bureau of the Government of Canada, after 15 years in other roles at the Bureau, and he was senior legal counsel to the Government of Canada in the negotiation of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement and other trade and investment treaty negotiations. He began his career as a foreign service officer, including a posting at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C., where he worked on trade and economic sanctions legislation and cross-border resource and environmental issues. Matthew teaches international trade and investment arbitration as an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law.
