About Mateya

Mateya Selders is a criminal defence lawyer with Strategic Criminal Defence, practising out of Calgary. Mateya began studying criminal justice at Mount Royal University, focusing on restorative justice, constitutional law, and impaired driving legislation. Mateya later earned a law degree at the University of Windsor, editing the Windsor Review of Legal and Social Issues and researching Canadian jury laws, including juror disqualification rules and the unanimity requirement. Mateya studied law for a semester in Germany and took part in a 2018 field study of China's criminal justice system. Mateya volunteers with the Calgary Youth Justice Society, chairing a panel that diverts youth out of the conventional justice system, and has mentored newcomers through the Calgary Immigrant Educational Centre.
