About Martha

Law is Martha Shea's second career; she previously worked as a librarian before studying at McGill University, where she earned two bachelor's degrees, in Civil Law and Common Law. She practises family law exclusively, through litigation, negotiation, and collaborative law, and was among the founders of the Groupe de Droit Collaboratif du Québec in October 2003. Over the past decade she has worked to expand the role of lawyers in family disputes and to build a culture of participatory justice within the profession, teaching and writing for the École du Barreau du Québec and speaking on participatory justice for the Barreau du Québec and the Canadian Bar Association. She currently sits on the Barreau du Québec's committee on participatory justice and its discipline committee, chairs the Montreal bar's round table on participatory justice, and is a member of its committee on limited-scope retainers and of the Canadian Bar Association's dispute resolution section for Quebec. She is a governor of the Fondation du Barreau and an associate member of the Groupe de Droit Collaboratif du Québec and the Association des Avocats/Avocates en droit de la famille du Québec.
