About Mark W. Crane

Mark W. Crane is a partner in Gowling WLG's Toronto office, and the core of the work is complex infrastructure disputes, with commercial and professional liability files alongside. Crane also leads the firm's Arbitrations Group nationally. Those clients range from engineering and construction businesses to energy and mining companies and public bodies, and the matters can be international or close to home.

Crane was called to the Ontario bar in 2005 and became a partner in 2013. Before law, Crane worked as a management consultant with a global consulting firm, and an MBA from McMaster sits next to the law degree. Clients have recognized a practical, efficient way of solving problems, and the work has brought Crane together with clients and counsel in Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia and Central America.

Away from client files, Crane has put real time into the Toronto Lawyers Association. Elected a trustee in 2014, Crane later served as the association's board president for the 2024-2025 term, and speaks often at its events.

Infrastructure and construction disputes

Complex P3 project disputes involving transit, bridges, hospitals and heritage buildings, plus disputes over arctic marine infrastructure, commercial construction and real estate developments.

Commercial and professional liability

Acting for professional engineering corporations on negligence and tort claims and on discipline matters before the Professional Engineers of Ontario. Crane has also acted for large Canadian financial institutions in fraud and reputational risk matters.

Municipal liability

Police liability and misfeasance in public office claims. Clients have included the City of Toronto and the Cornwall Community Police Service and its members.

Regulatory and public inquiry work

Counsel to an intervener at the Ontario Energy Board on rate rebasing and leave to construct proceedings, and counsel to a party at the Cornwall Public Inquiry.
