About Magdalena Hanebach

Magdalena (Magda) Hanebach is a nuclear lawyer in Gowling WLG's Toronto office, where the work covers both reactors already running and new nuclear builds still taking shape. As an associate who's also the firm's Deputy Global Director, Nuclear Power Generation, Hanebach helps owners, investors and contractors at every point in the supply chain, for public and private sector clients in Canada and abroad. The questions range widely: regulation and legislation, nuclear liability, how to structure contracts, and how to finance a project and manage its risk.

Hanebach also handles civil and commercial disputes and represents clients in court, at arbitration and in mediation. Called to the Ontario bar in 2013 and admitted in New York the following year, Hanebach holds a JD (cum laude) from Brooklyn Law School and an honours BA from Queen's University.

Beyond client work, Hanebach is treasurer and an elected board member of the Canadian Nuclear Law Organisation and organizes its Nuclear Law School, a yearly two-day program for lawyers and people working in the industry. In early 2025, The Globe and Mail turned to Hanebach on Canada's reliance on the U.S. for uranium enrichment, and the associate's take was that it would take "a lot of back-and-forth with the U.S." along with many legislative and regulatory changes.
