About Kayla Cockburn

Kayla Cockburn handles disputes from SV Law's Guelph office as part of the firm's Civil Litigation group. The files range across commercial, construction and estates conflicts, and there's a second strand to the practice too: Cockburn acts for healthcare professionals, along with people in other regulated fields, in both civil and regulatory matters. That work runs through the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Small Claims Court, private mediation and arbitration, and a range of administrative bodies.

Called to the Ontario bar in 2022, Cockburn came to SV Law after articling at a national full-service firm and staying on there as an associate. Those years brought experience with administrative and regulatory files, plus advising on public law questions that were urgent and highly sensitive.

Advocacy has been part of the picture since law school at the University of Ottawa, where Cockburn competed in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot and the International Criminal Court Moot and took awards for both oral and written work. Student years also included casework at the Refugee Hub, research assistant work, and internships with Global Affairs Canada and the Department of Justice's Civil Litigation Section. Before law, Cockburn studied at McMaster University, earning a master's in history after an honours BA.

Closer to home, Cockburn sits on the Wellington Law Association's board of directors and served as a regional coordinator on the Ontario Bar Association Health Law Section executive for 2024 to 2025.
