About Karl

Karl Toews is a criminal defence lawyer who joined Kruse Law Firm in 2014 after being called to the bar in 2012, and he handles criminal matters exclusively. Mentored by Senior Counsel Michael Kruse, he has grown into an experienced trial lawyer known for effective courtroom advocacy, having defended hundreds of clients on charges under the Criminal Code and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act throughout southwestern Ontario. He has guest-lectured at the law faculties of Western University and the University of Toronto. Before joining the firm, Karl worked as a federal prosecutor, mostly at the busy Brampton courthouse, where he also advised police officers, giving him insight into the trial process and an edge in negotiating with Crown counsel. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto's law school, where he worked with defence lawyer Alan Gold and volunteered with the Association in Defence of the Wrongfully Convicted, and he articled at the federal Department of Justice in Toronto.
