Michael Kruse moved into private practice in 1993, after spending the first four years of practice as an Assistant Crown Attorney with the Ministry of the Attorney General in Windsor and Toronto. As a prosecutor, Kruse took hundreds of trials through the Ontario Court of Justice and about two dozen jury trials through the Superior Court of Justice. Kruse holds a 1984 business degree from Queen’s University and a 1987 law degree from the University of Western Ontario, and was called to the Ontario bar in 1989.
Kruse isn’t the only lawyer at the firm who knows the Crown’s side of a case. Karl Toews worked as a federal prosecutor, mostly out of the Brampton courthouse. Before joining the firm, Victoria Zavitz served as a Crown Attorney on serious criminal matters, among them violent offences, firearms cases and sexual offences, while Ryan Venables has also done per diem Crown Attorney work on tobacco offences.
Other lawyers arrived by different routes. Alexis Tandazo earned a law degree at Bond University in Australia and, while there, regularly volunteered at a legal clinic that helped members of the public with live legal problems. Venables’s path ran through policing: a civilian job with the RCMP’s "O" Division Headquarters on complex organized crime investigations, then a hire by York Regional Police and training at the Ontario Police College before becoming an officer.
