About Josephine

Josephine de Whytell is a sole practitioner and a member of the Saskatchewan and Ontario bars. Trained by Indigenous lawyers, she has built her career representing First Nations, First Nation organizations and Indigenous individuals. She served as co-counsel for two parties with standing at the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and testified before the Senate on behalf of the Indigenous Bar Association on the Cannabis Act and related Criminal Code amendments. Her child welfare work has included acting for First Nation child welfare organizations and for First Nations with standing in child welfare proceedings, with a focus on Indigenous jurisdiction and culturally appropriate services. She is currently working on Specific Claims, providing legal research and position papers for a Treaty organization building its jurisdictional and institutional capacity.
