Immigration LawJonathan Porter practices in all areas of Canadian refugee and immigration law and has represented clients before the Immigration and Refugee Board, the Federal Court, and the Supreme Court of Canada. He regularly handles complex inadmissibility and enforcement matters and has particular expertise in overseas refugee applications, drawing on his prior work as a refugee resettlement officer with UNHCR and the US Refugee Admissions Program in Kenya, Chad, Rwanda, and South Africa. He also previously worked with the Refugee Sponsorship Training Program, training sponsors and lawyers across Canada. Jonathan is a graduate of McGill University's law faculty and holds an LL.M. in International Humanitarian Law from the University of Essex, where he won the prize for highest overall grade and best thesis. He has published on international human rights law and written a book chapter on the detention of refugee claimants in Canada. He is a member of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers and assists clients in French, Spanish, Haitian Creole, and Swahili. Jonathan has also worked with UNICEF on child protection issues in Burundi, the Central African Republic, and Mauritania.
