About John
John Shields is a commercial litigator with more than three decades of experience handling partnership disputes, banking, contract, wrongful dismissal, restrictive covenant, injunction, arbitration, professional discipline, and appellate matters. He has appeared before the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the BC Court of Appeal, the Alberta and Saskatchewan Courts of Queen's Bench, and the Supreme Court of Canada, as well as in arbitrations in BC, Nevada, and New York and before several BC regulatory bodies. He has acted for one of Canada's largest banks for 30 years and sometimes takes new files on a contingency-fee basis. Shields wrote the first Canadian textbook on affidavits, published by LexisNexis in January 2023, and has taught continuing legal education courses on affidavits, chambers practice, ethics, and civil evidence. In 2023 he provided an expert opinion in Ontario litigation on a lawyer's duties in preparing affidavits.
