John Kingman Phillips, K.C., is a partner and litigation lawyer with a wide-ranging practice covering corporate and commercial disputes, class actions, administrative law, criminal law, professional liability, insurance litigation, and labour and employment matters. He has served as counsel in a number of precedent-setting cases, including R. v. Stinchcombe on Crown disclosure obligations and Merrifield v. RCMP on workplace harassment, and he represented former National Chief Phil Fontaine and the Assembly of First Nations in the Indian Residential Schools class action settlement. More recently he represented Omar Khadr, secured compensation following his detention at Guantanamo Bay, and acted for intelligence officers suing CSIS for discrimination and harassment. He holds a B.A. with high honours from the University of Saskatchewan, an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School and an M.A. in philosophy of science from the University of Guelph, and is a member of the law societies of Alberta, Ontario and Nunavut.
