About Jason Mercier

Jason Mercier defends physicians. As associate counsel in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office, Jason practises health law and medical defence, and acts as counsel to the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) on the defence of doctors from across Canada, along with other complex medico-legal questions. Day to day, Jason sorts through hard legal and regulatory problems and gives clients clear, practical advice when a matter is sensitive.

Gowling is where Jason's legal career started: summer student first, then articling, then an associate in the health law group. In those years Jason represented doctors all over Ontario in regulatory matters and civil cases alike, appearing before a range of courts and administrative tribunals. The call to the Ontario bar came in 2016.

Jason's experience also reaches into workplace law. At Hicks Morley in Ottawa, Jason was a bilingual associate who advised and represented employers and management, private and public sector both, on labour, employment and human rights issues. Jason has also worked as legal counsel to a major Canadian Crown corporation, handling a broad mix of labour and employment matters.

Teaching is part of the story too. Jason has worked as an educator in Canada and abroad, holds a Bachelor of Education from Laurentian University, and in 2020 lectured at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law, where the course was bilingual legal drafting. Clients can work with Jason in English or French. Away from the office, Jason likes to spend time with family and stay active in the community.
