J. Berry Hykin

About J.

J. Berry Hykin specializes in supporting Indigenous self-governance, working closely with Indigenous peoples to build legal and administrative tools that support effective self-governance, promote Indigenous legal orders, and protect Indigenous traditions and ways of life. Her practice encompasses Aboriginal and treaty rights, governance support, First Nation constitutions, land interests, and treaty negotiation. She holds a BA (honours, with distinction) in classical studies from the University of Victoria and Boston College (2002) and a JD from the University of Victoria (2005), which included an intensive Indigenous Legal Studies program, and has additional training in civil and family law mediation. She joined Woodward & Company in 2004 as a student and has remained with the firm since, being called to the BC Bar in September 2006 and the Alberta Bar in January 2011. She regularly presents at conferences and workshops, guest instructs at UVic Law, and volunteers speaking to high school students about law and Indigenous rights.
