G. John Samms is a partner and Energy Team Lead at Stewart McKelvey, based in St. John's. He leads multi-disciplinary teams on major projects, fisheries matters, labour and employment disputes, and commercial litigation, and has appeared at all levels of court in Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario. Before joining the firm in 2019, he worked for the Newfoundland and Labrador government, serving on the province's negotiating team for the Atlantic Accord renewal and on its Collective Bargaining Steering Committee. His litigation experience includes obtaining an emergency injunction on behalf of snow crab producers during a 2026 strike and representing the Newfoundland Growlers in a lease dispute. Samms holds a JD from the University of New Brunswick (2015), an MA from Memorial University of Newfoundland (2012), and a BA from Memorial (2010), and has taught constitutional law and public policy at Memorial University.
