About Domenic A. Crolla

Domenic Crolla is an Ottawa partner at Gowling WLG whose work sits where health care, liability and technology meet. Product and professional liability files make up a large part of the practice, alongside health law and information technology matters, and Domenic advises clients whether or not a dispute has reached litigation. Osgoode Hall Law School now offers a health law scholarship in Domenic's name, in recognition of a career spent on medical liability, privacy and what new technology means for both.

Domenic finished a JD at Osgoode in 1985 and was called to the Ontario bar in 1987. In court, the work runs from trials to appeals, at every level of court and before administrative tribunals, and it's included a number of complex matters. Domenic has also helped run the firm itself: from 2007 to 2010 the role was firm managing partner, internal, with a seat on the executive committee, and Domenic served on the board of trustees until the end of 2021, and was lead trustee in 2020 and 2021.

Technology has been a thread through all of it. Domenic is keenly interested in how information technology can be put to work in professional practice, especially in law and in medicine, and in 1998 and 1999 helped draft a proposed telehealth convention through an International Bar Association subcommittee on law and medicine. In a 2014 Law Times piece on a trial judge's finding that counsel should stop reviewing draft opinion reports, Domenic, then a Holland Group member, explained that lawyers had long been understood to be free to work with the witnesses who write them so they grasp their role.

Outside the courtroom, Domenic has long served as Reach Canada's honorary counsel. In September 2023 Domenic hosted the Reach Beyond evening at Bayview Yards, which celebrated Reach's 42 years as a free legal service and its move into ABLE2, and the firm was one of the event's sponsors.
