About Caitlin Schropp

Clients facing cross-border trade rules, privacy questions or a defamation fight can turn to Caitlin Schropp, an associate in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office. Caitlin's work blends civil litigation with administrative law. On trade files that means guidance on export controls, economic sanctions and customs compliance, plus how trade agreements are read and applied. Privacy and access to information are the other big piece, and when a matter becomes a dispute, Caitlin steps in to represent the client.

Before law school, Caitlin earned a University of Waterloo science degree that paired biotechnology with business, and held marketing and sales roles with health and engineering technology companies. At Dalhousie's Schulich School of Law, Caitlin finished a JD in 2021 along with a certificate in Law and Technology, and was called to the Ontario bar in 2022.

Advocacy and information rights both showed up early. In 2021 Caitlin was one of four students who argued for Schulich at the Harold G. Fox Intellectual Property Moot, where that year's problem dealt with trademarks and who is entitled to official marks. As a Pro Bono Students Canada volunteer, Caitlin also did access to information research at the Centre for Law and Democracy.

Caitlin founded the Dalhousie Synchronized Swimming Club and was its president in 2018, and in 2019 served as Vice President of the Canadian University Artistic Swimming League. By early 2020 the club had grown from seven swimmers and a coach the year before to more than 20 members, with both an experienced team and a novice team headed to that season's CUASL national competition. In a February 2020 interview, Caitlin described artistic swimming as a sport that takes a lot of grit, where a four-minute routine can feel like running a marathon.
