About Alex Sadvari

Alex Sadvari is an environmental lawyer and a partner in Gowling WLG's Toronto office, whose work also reaches into renewable energy, development and land use planning. Corporate, municipal and Indigenous clients come to Alex for regulatory strategy and someone to represent them. Alex is also National Co-Lead of the firm's BioEnergy Group in Canada and works on biogas, renewable natural gas and biofuel projects in Ontario and elsewhere in the country.

Alex was called to the Ontario bar in 2011, starting out at a time when Ontario's FIT programs were driving a big push for renewable energy. A year-long secondment followed at Ontario Power Generation Inc., where Alex was the in-house environmental counsel and dealt with every environmental law question the business raised, from risk management and compliance to inspections and investigations at its nuclear and hydroelectric stations. Many of Alex's clients are in waste management and agriculture, and some already produce biogas while others plan to. In 2021, as a Toronto-based associate, Alex became co-leader of the new bioenergy group the firm launched that year, alongside Calgary partner Alison Gray.

Projects often call for a team, and Alex regularly works with ecologists, hydrogeologists, land use planners and economists to move them forward. When a dispute or charge comes up, Alex steps in as an advocate before administrative tribunals such as the Ontario Land Tribunal and in court. Alex has sat on the Canadian Biogas Association's board since being elected in March 2022, and has been recognized in Best Lawyers for Environmental Law since 2025.

Alex grew up largely on a farm in East Garafraxa Township in Dufferin County, which is where a long interest in food and agriculture issues comes from. Canadian biogas and RNG are both a personal and professional passion.
