Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP is a Canadian business law firm headquartered in Toronto, with additional offices in Montreal and New York. It took its current name and shape on February 1, 2001, when Davies Ward & Beck, a Toronto firm founded in 1961, merged with Phillips & Vineberg, a Montreal firm founded in 1895. Davies is often grouped with a small set of Canadian business law firms known informally as the "Seven Sisters," a term that reflects a long, shared history of advising public and private companies, governments, and regulatory bodies on complex commercial matters.
The Toronto side of that history began in 1961, when the firm's founder left an established Bay Street firm to build a practice that hired and promoted lawyers on merit rather than school or family connections, with particular strength in tax, securities, and mergers and acquisitions. That focus carries into the firm's work today, which spans public M&A, capital markets, tax, competition, and disputes for Canadian and international clients. In 2026 the firm acted for Agnico Eagle Mines in a series of transactions worth approximately $3.8 billion to consolidate mining properties in Finland, and for La Caisse in its partnership with Brookfield to acquire Boralex Inc. for $9.0 billion.
Wheelchair accessibleDavies' Toronto office occupies the 40th floor of the RBC Centre at 155 Wellington Street West, at the corner of Wellington and Simcoe streets. The tower, completed in 2009, sits just outside Toronto's traditional Financial District and helped extend the downtown core west toward the Entertainment District near Roy Thomson Hall. It's connected to the PATH network, and a Toronto Star architecture critic later included it in a short list of notable buildings completed in Toronto in the 21st century.
The Montreal office is on the 27th floor of 1501 McGill College Avenue, a 36 storey postmodern tower known as La Tour McGill for the pyramid shaped, illuminated mechanical penthouse at its roofline, a recognizable feature of the downtown skyline. The building is connected to the McGill metro station through Montreal's underground city network.
