About Summit Law LLP

Summit Law LLP is a small litigation firm in Ottawa that defends insurers, institutions, and small and medium businesses in insurance and commercial disputes. It's woman-founded and led by partners Alison Hopkins and Debbie Orth, with a team of four lawyers called to the bar in Ontario and, for some, British Columbia as well. The firm was previously known as Bertschi Orth Solicitors and Barristers LLP; its old web address, boslaw.ca, now forwards to summitlaw.ca, and the practice kept the same Ottawa phone number through the change.

Summit Law's caseload runs through accident benefits and SABS claims, bodily injury and motor vehicle defence, coverage disputes, subrogation, and construction and corporate litigation, plus a mediation practice run by Debbie Orth, who was called to the bar in 1993 and has appeared before the Superior Court, Divisional Court, and the Ontario Court of Appeal. Alison Hopkins, called in Ontario in 2011 and British Columbia in 2012, worked earlier as a visiting lawyer at the Legal Resources Centre in Durban, South Africa, on constitutional test case litigation over health access and education before returning to insurance defence work in Canada.

Beyond its Ottawa office, the firm keeps remote desks in Squamish, BC and Montreal, QC, and between its lawyers it works in English, French, Bengali, and Hindi.
