About Debbie
Debbie Orth is a partner at Summit Law LLP with over twenty-five years of experience in insurance defence and insured services. She has acted as trial counsel on catastrophic losses, including a representative property damage claim from the 1998 ice storm, and has appeared before the Superior Court, Divisional Court, and the Ontario Court of Appeal, along with filing a response to a leave application at the Supreme Court of Canada. Her practice covers first-party cases before the Licence Appeal Tribunal, arbitrations through the Financial Services Commission, and private arbitrations on priority of payment and loss transfer. She is a frequent speaker at conferences for groups including the County of Carleton Law Association, the Canadian Society of Medical Evaluators, and Canadian Defence Lawyers, and was invited to make submissions on behalf of Canadian Defence Lawyers to the provincial panel reviewing the accident benefit scheme led by former Justice Cunningham. She earned her LL.B. cum laude from the University of Ottawa in 1991 and her B.A. from Carleton University in 1981, and was called to the bar in 1993. Orth serves on the board of the Canadian Defence Lawyers Association and chairs the international group of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel.
