About Black & Associates

Black & Associates is a civil and commercial litigation firm on Elgin Street in downtown Ottawa, operating as Katie Black Professional Corporation. Katie Black founded the practice, which now includes five lawyers who cover commercial litigation and arbitration, general litigation, appellate advocacy, professional negligence, municipal and construction disputes, defamation, and employment law, plus public and media relations work tied to reputation cases. It represents businesses and individuals across Ottawa, Toronto, and Eastern Ontario, appearing before arbitrators, Ontario's courts, the Federal Court, and various tribunals.

Black clerked for former Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin at the Supreme Court of Canada, worked in the Supreme Court Advocacy Group at a national firm, and helped establish a mid-sized litigation firm before starting Black & Associates. In 2016, Black served as Federal Judicial Affairs Advisor to Canada's Minister of Justice, helping coordinate more than 130 judicial appointments, and regularly teaches first-year contract law at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law. The rest of the team brings its own mix of backgrounds, from labour relations work and clinical care in a hospital's infectious diseases division to time spent as a line cook, and between them the lawyers practice in both English and French.
