About Flett Beccario

Flett Beccario is a full-service law firm based in Welland, Ontario, serving the Niagara Region since 1919, when John Hamilton Flett started a law practice in the city. Carl Beccario became a partner in 1949, and Philip Crouch joined the practice after that, eventually giving the firm its current name. Three of the firm's past lawyers went on to become judges. Today Flett Beccario is a team of about eight lawyers working out of its office on Division Street, handling business law, real estate, wills and estates, family law, and civil litigation, including personal injury, construction, and insurance matters.

Several of the current lawyers have long histories with the firm. One was called to the Ontario bar in 1977, articled at Flett Beccario, and has practiced there ever since. Two others, both called to the bar in 1995, studied at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto before joining. Two of the firm's lawyers have also taught commercial law and civil litigation courses at Niagara College. Another lawyer relocated to the Niagara Region after several years practicing in Timmins, Ontario, joining Flett Beccario in 2018. That mix of deep local roots and lawyers who came to Welland from elsewhere runs through a firm that has kept its name in the same Niagara Region city for more than a century.

The neighbourhood

Flett Beccario's office is on Division Street in downtown Welland, where the street crosses the Welland Recreational Waterway, the old channel of the Welland Canal that once carried ships through the middle of the city. Welland grew up around that canal crossing, and the city's motto, "Where Rails and Water Meet," points to the rail and water transportation that shaped its early economy, right in the downtown core the firm has served since 1919.

The canal was rerouted around Welland in the 1970s, and the downtown has been rebuilding around the old channel ever since, with a Civic Square and a walking trail along the waterway replacing much of the old canal traffic. A small parkette known locally as Guerrilla Park sits along the water between the Main Street and Division Street bridges, part of that same effort to draw people back downtown. It's a fitting setting for a firm whose real estate, business, and estate work runs through the same Niagara Region communities that grew up along the canal.
