What does a personal injury lawyer do?

A personal injury lawyer represents people who've been hurt through someone else's negligence, and they fight to recover compensation for those injuries. In Ontario that usually means two parallel tracks: a claim for accident benefits through your own insurer, and a lawsuit against the at-fault party. Car crashes, slip and falls, dog bites, and long-term disability denials are the most common files.

The work is deadline-heavy. Accident-benefit claims have short notice windows, and Ontario's auto-insurance framework is regulated by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario, so getting advice early protects your options.

How do injury lawyers charge?

Most work on contingency. You don't pay legal fees up front, and the firm takes an agreed percentage only if it recovers for you. That arrangement lets injured people afford representation while they're off work, but the percentage and the treatment of disbursements vary between firms, so ask for the retainer terms in writing.

What should you look for?

  • A track record with your specific type of claim, whether that's a motor vehicle accident, a disability denial, or a serious injury.
  • Clear answers on who handles your file day to day.
  • A firm that's comfortable taking a case to trial, not just settling early.

You can verify any lawyer's licence and standing on the Law Society of Ontario directory. When you're ready, browse the injury firms below by region and city.
