What does an employment lawyer in London do?

An employment lawyer in London advises workers and employers on the rules that govern a job, from workplace policies and discipline to severance and the end of employment. Common files include wrongful dismissal, unpaid wages or overtime, constructive dismissal, and human rights complaints. Most matters settle through negotiation, but a larger wrongful-dismissal claim can be filed in the Superior Court of Justice, which sits at the London Courthouse on Dundas Street and serves London, Strathroy, and the communities of Middlesex Centre. For most private-sector jobs the starting point is Ontario's Employment Standards Act, 2000, the minimum-standards law the Ministry of Labour enforces.

How does employment law work in Ontario?

The Employment Standards Act, 2000 sets the floor: minimum wage, hours of work, public holidays, and the minimum notice or pay an employer owes when it ends a job. These are minimums, not the whole story. Not every workplace runs on the provincial rules. Federally regulated sectors, which include banks, telecommunications, and interprovincial transport, follow the Canada Labour Code instead. If you work for a national carrier or drive a truck across provincial lines out of London, your rights may sit under the federal law. An employment lawyer confirms which regime applies first, because it changes the deadlines and the forum.

What can you recover beyond the statutory minimum?

Often more than the statute alone. The notice or pay set out in the Employment Standards Act is a minimum, and the common law can entitle a dismissed employee to more. Courts weigh age, length of service, the type of role, and how hard it is to find comparable work, so common-law notice can run well past the statutory figure. Claims of that size are pursued in the Superior Court of Justice at the London Courthouse. Discrimination runs on a separate track. A complaint that you were treated unfairly because of a protected ground, such as disability, age, sex, or family status, goes to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario under the Ontario Human Rights Code, not to the court that hears a dismissal claim. Deadlines there are short, so get advice early.

How do you choose an employment law firm in London?

Look for a firm that regularly handles your side of the table, whether you're an employee facing a dismissal or an employer writing a fair severance package. Ask whether they act mostly for workers or for management, how they charge, and who will carry your file day to day. A local firm will know the London Courthouse and can meet clients from Strathroy and Middlesex Centre without a long trip.
