He earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from Simon Fraser University in 1976 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia in 1980, followed by a Master of Laws from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, in 1991. He was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1981, is also admitted as a barrister and solicitor in Australia, and joined Baker Newby in 1991 after articling with a Vancouver firm, serving as Crown Counsel, and lecturing in law in Australia. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2010, now King's Counsel, and served as an elected Bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia from 2013 until becoming a Life Bencher in 2022, chairing its Discipline, Complaints Review, and Ethics committees. He is a longtime member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Trial Lawyers Association of B.C.
