About Scott
Scott Newman is a partner at Newman & Company, practising criminal defence full time in Manitoba. Originally from British Columbia, he moved to the province to attend Robson Hall at the University of Manitoba, graduating as class valedictorian after articling for three years with Greg Brodsky, Q.C. Scott has practised criminal defence for over a decade, appearing at all three levels of Manitoba's courts as well as in Saskatchewan and Northwestern Ontario, on charges under the Highway Traffic Act, the Criminal Code, and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. In 2016, he successfully argued before the Manitoba Court of Appeal in R. v. Bittern that a law limiting pre-sentence custody credit for offenders denied bail was unconstitutional, a position the Supreme Court of Canada later upheld in R. v. Safarzadeh-Markhali. He has also handled cases involving protection orders, peace bonds, and regulatory charges under statutes such as the Wildlife Act and the Tobacco Tax Act, and has served on the Animal Care Appeal Board and the Municipal Board. Scott completed a Master of Laws in Criminal Law and Procedure at Osgoode Hall in 2024 and has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in Canada for Criminal Law since 2025.
