Criminal Defence
Civil Litigation & Dispute ResolutionKarl Gowenlock is an associate at Newman & Company focusing on criminal defence. Born and raised in Winnipeg, he was called to the bar in 2010 after articling with Sheldon Pinx, Q.C., and has since defended clients on charges ranging from drug trafficking and impaired driving to homicide and property offences. Karl also takes on civil and criminal forfeiture matters, conducts civil litigation against police agencies and other justice-system actors, and appears before administrative tribunals such as the Licence Suspension Appeal Board. He successfully argued a constitutional challenge before the Manitoba Court of Appeal in R. v. Kovich, striking down a Criminal Code provision that limited credit for pre-sentence custody. Karl volunteers with the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, where he served as President from 2019 to 2021, and the Winnipeg Housing Rehabilitation Corporation.
