About Rob Deutschmann

Rob Deutschmann is the founding partner of Deutschmann de Koning Law in Kitchener, and the whole of Rob's practice is about people who've been hurt in an accident or have become disabled. Personal injury law and disability law are the two fields Rob works in.

Law came after five years in private industry and an honours business degree from Wilfrid Laurier University. Rob then earned a law degree with distinction at the University of Western Ontario in 1993, articled at Flynn and Sorbara in Kitchener, and opened a practice on February 14, 1995, the same day as the call to the bar.

Rob has been interviewed on injury and insurance questions by Law Times, Insurance Business Canada, CBC and the Waterloo Region Record. After the Court of Appeal found a disability claim time-barred, Rob told Law Times that MPPs at Queen's Park should change the law, adding that telling people their legal rights ought to be part of an insurer's obligations given how dominant insurers are. In 2021 Canadian Lawyer reported that Rob had drawn attention to research on better predicting how people recover from spinal cord injuries.

Rob grew up in Waterloo and went to St. David's and St. Jerome's for high school. Rob's family, three daughters included, now lives in the village of Ayr. From October 2010 to November 2014 Rob was Mayor of North Dumfries Township and a regional councillor for the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, and also sat on the Grand River Conservation Authority Board and served as a director of Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro. Away from work there's recreational soccer and hockey, a round of golf when time allows, and running: a late start that has led to several marathons, half-marathons and charity runs.

Practice areas

Accident injury and accident benefits

Rob acts for people injured in accidents, and in a Law Times interview spoke about changes to how attendant care benefits are paid when a family member is the one providing the care.

Denied disability benefits

Disability insurance is the other side of Rob's work. Rob's advice to anyone whose disability benefits have been denied is to see a personal injury lawyer right away, so the right to sue the insurer isn't lost to a limitation period.
