About Reyam Zager

Reyam Zager defends people charged with criminal offences in Ontario, and can take a case on in English or in Polish. As a partner at Godinho Zager Kraska LLP, Reyam has kept a practice devoted only to criminal law, appearing for clients in trial courts at every level across the province.

That defence work rests on years spent prosecuting. Once called to the bar, Reyam joined the Crown as an Assistant Crown Attorney and carried files in Toronto, Halton, Peel and Niagara, which meant seeing the justice system from the prosecution's table before moving to the defence's. The former Crown perspective still comes through: in July 2026, Reyam explained to CBC News in Toronto why prosecutors sometimes choose not to proceed with a charge police have laid, citing reasons such as no reasonable prospect of conviction, keeping a case clear for a jury, and avoiding delay.

Criminal law first caught Reyam's attention during an honours B.A. in criminology at the University of Toronto. At Lakehead University's Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, Reyam posted the second-highest first-year criminal law grade in the class, made the class's moot final in second year and helped judge the school's first-year criminal law moot. The summer of 2017 brought work with Jonathan Rudin, program director at Aboriginal Legal Services, on follow-up advocacy for the First Nations Youth Inquest; Reyam built the framework for tracking how the inquest's parties had answered its 145 recommendations. A four-month placement at Sewrattan Criminal Lawyers came next, during third year, at a time when Reyam's stated aim was to improve how disadvantaged and oppressed people, racial minorities and Indigenous peoples in particular, interact with the criminal justice system.

Born in Poland and from Wrocław, Reyam came to Canada at age three. Polish-speaking clients can get help with bail and criminal charges in their own language. Reyam has acted for Polish clients in many Ontario courthouses and stays in touch by email, text or virtual meeting.
