About Reed W. Taubner

Trademarks are at the centre of Reed W. Taubner's work as counsel in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office, where Taubner sits in the Intellectual Property Group. The practice follows a mark from its earliest days to long after registration: clearing it, protecting it and helping the owner put it to commercial use. Taubner has acted for many brand owners, including on global portfolios of trademarks and domain names, and clients have come from entertainment, technology and software, natural resources and packaged consumer goods.

When someone files an application that worries a client, or a brand comes under attack, Taubner takes the matter to the Trademark Opposition Board. Infringement work runs from the cease and desist letter to settlement talks. It isn't all disputes, though. Taubner was one of the IP lawyers, with Alexander Ross, on the Gowling WLG team that advised EMERGE on a corporate transaction.

Called to the Ontario bar in 2010, Taubner earned a JD at Queen's University after a commerce degree in business economics and law from the University of Alberta. Before Gowling WLG came time at a major Canadian law firm and an in-house role with a brand owner. Taubner has also taught at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law as a part-time professor.

Taubner's writing includes a 2010 Canadian Journal of Law and Technology article on Google AdWords and trademark law, and a 2022 piece for the firm, co-written with Michael Crichton, on how exhaustion of rights differs between patents and trademarks in Canada. Best Lawyers has recognized Taubner in Intellectual Property Law since 2022.
