About Gurbir Sidhu

Gurbir Sidhu is an associate at Smart & Biggar who helps technology companies build up their intellectual property, decide where it fits in the business and turn it into revenue. Most of that work is for engineering and high-tech clients, and it runs from drafting and prosecuting patents to licensing deals, IP due diligence and analytics. The technology itself is familiar ground, from software and artificial intelligence to robotics and aerospace.

Sidhu trained as a computer science engineer before turning to law, earning a B.Tech. in computer science engineering from Punjab Technical University in 2011, then an LL.B. from the University of Delhi in 2016. Admission to the Bar Council of India followed in 2017, and registration as a patent agent in India in 2019. Sidhu then completed an LL.M. in intellectual property law at Osgoode Hall and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2023.

During the LL.M., Sidhu represented Osgoode at the USPTO's National Patent Application Drafting Competition in 2022, and the team took third place.

Away from client files, Sidhu teaches business and IP law as an adjunct professor at Conestoga College and volunteers as a mentor to law students and early career professionals in IPIC and Black Law Students' Association of Canada programs. Sidhu also speaks often on AI and IP, at venues ranging from SickKids Hospital's education series to IP masterclasses at Spark Centre in Oshawa. On virtual reality gaming, Sidhu has pointed out that an invention cutting latency or computing demand may count as a patentable technical efficiency gain.
