About Nathan Piché

Nathan Piché protects brands and creative work through trademark and copyright law, from clearing a new mark and getting it registered to enforcing it and, when it comes to that, litigating. A partner and registered trademark agent in Gowling WLG's Ottawa IP group, Piché handles both disputes and day-to-day portfolio work, including work that has covered large international trademark portfolios.

Piché has acted for clients at the Federal Court of Canada and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, as well as before the Canadian Trademarks Opposition Board. Called to the Ontario bar in 2016 after earning a JD cum laude from the University of Ottawa, Piché joined Gowling WLG's partnership effective January 1, 2025.

The work reaches beyond client files, too. At the University of Ottawa, Piché teaches the trademark part of the Intellectual Property Law course to upper-year students as a part-time professor, and with the International Trademark Association, sits on the Pro-Bono Subcommittee. Best Lawyers has taken note, listing Piché among its Ones to Watch in Canada for intellectual property law from 2022 to 2025 and in The Best Lawyers in Canada for 2027.

Music came first, though. Before law school, Piché spent five years on the road as a professional musician in Canada, the United States and Australia, picking up two Juno Award nominations with the London, Ontario band Article One. Later, Piché sang with Herding Cats, a band of fellow lawyers, at a benefit concert for the Ottawa Food Bank.
