About Matthew
Matthew Kersten is a partner at Sutherland Law with a broad Ontario litigation practice covering commercial disputes, estate litigation, matters involving bankruptcy and insolvency, construction and real estate cases, employment issues and appeals. Before joining the firm, he articled at a large full-service practice and then developed his advocacy skills at a downtown litigation boutique. He has acted for individuals, companies, trustees, creditors and estates in matters heard by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, its Commercial List, and Ontario's Court of Appeal. His reported decisions cover disputes between shareholders and partners, allegations of fraud, injunction proceedings, receiverships, contested estates and significant procedural motions. Having practiced law for over a decade, Matthew regularly handles motions for summary judgment, appeals, and enforcement proceedings tied to commercial disputes, providing practical, strategic counsel tailored to each client's goals. He earned his J.D. from Queen's University Faculty of Law in 2014 and his honours B.A. from Queen's in 2011, and while in law school he took on the role of co-editor-in-chief for the Queen's Law Journal and contributed to the Canadian Guide to Legal Citation.
