About Maggie

Maggie Wente is a partner and a member of Serpent River First Nation, born and raised in Toronto, of Anishinaabe and settler descent. She graduated from the University of Toronto's combined LL.B./M.S.W. program and from McGill University with a B.A. in Philosophy, and is a Registered Social Worker. She advises First Nations and regional Indigenous organizations across a wide range of subjects, acting as both litigator and solicitor, with particular attention to equality in child welfare services and helping First Nations exercise jurisdiction over child welfare. Maggie also handles governance matters such as election and membership codes, land management, and the responsibilities of First Nations councils, and has appeared before tribunals and courts in Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador, the Federal Court, and the Supreme Court of Canada. She serves as President of the Indigenous Leadership Initiative and is past-President of the Board of Directors at Aboriginal Legal Services, and was a Commissioner at the Ontario Human Rights Commission from 2006 to 2015. Maggie belongs to the Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador bars and has been recognized in the Lexpert Directory and Best Lawyers in Canada for her work in Indigenous law.
