Jason Brandt pairs a doctorate in chemistry with a litigation practice built around intellectual property. Based in Ottawa, Jason is an associate in Gowling WLG's Intellectual Property Group and works within the firm's IP Litigation and Life Sciences practice groups, taking on cases to enforce patents, trademarks, designs, copyright and trade secrets in the Federal Court and the courts of Ontario.

The science came first. After an honours chemistry degree at the University of Alberta, Jason went on to a PhD in chemistry at the University of British Columbia, working in Laurel Schafer's group on organic and inorganic chemistry, with NSERC awards supporting the research. That work led to papers in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and ACS Catalysis. A postdoctoral post in Brad Carrow's group in Princeton University's Department of Chemistry followed, where the research turned to new polymers. Jason then went back to the University of Alberta for a law degree, finishing in 2023, and was called to the Ontario bar in 2024.

Jason now puts that lab background to work in proceedings under the Patent Act and the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations. Clients come to Jason from many different industries for strategic guidance on keeping their intellectual property protected and on enforcing it.

Jason also writes about Canadian patent law for the firm. A 2024 article broke down the Federal Court's ruling in Allergan v Juno, where obviousness sat at the centre of the decision, and Jason has since co-written the firm's review of life sciences patent developments in 2024 and a 2026 piece on common-design infringement following Adeia Guides v Videotron.
