About Madeline R. Hall

Health law and medical defence make up the core of Madeline R. Hall's work as counsel with Gowling WLG in Ottawa, and that includes acting for the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA). Hall's had matters in the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Appeal, and has also appeared before a number of administrative tribunals.

Hall earned a JD from Queen's University in 2013 and was called to the Ontario bar a year later. Health care law and litigation came first, in private practice. From there, Hall moved to a national organisation offering legal support to nurses, advising regulated health professionals on legal questions and on managing risk. A stint as a lawyer and investigator at Mortimer Khoraych Workplace Investigations followed, handling workplace, institutional and regulatory investigations and developing skills in employment law and procedural fairness before the move to Gowling WLG.

Hall has spoken at Lancaster House and to nurse practitioner and occupational health nursing groups, and has taught hundreds of health care providers about the law at conferences across Canada. From 2019 to 2025, Hall sat on the Research Ethics Board at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, bringing a legal eye to clinical trial applications. These days the volunteering happens through Pro Bono Ontario and at a neighbourhood elementary school.

Away from work, Hall's a long-distance runner who's travelled widely in Southeast Asia and in Central and South America, and can get by in conversation in French and Spanish.
