Lorne Waldman is the founder of the firm and has practised exclusively in immigration and refugee law since 1979, the year he opened his own practice. He earned his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1977 and an LL.M. from the University of Toronto in 2000, writing his thesis on the limits of a state's power to expel non-citizens under international human rights law. He is the author and editor of several texts on immigration law, work that has been cited as authority by the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada. Lorne has argued many leading immigration and refugee cases before the Supreme Court of Canada, including Pushpanathan v. Canada and the Charkaoui appeals, and represented Maher Arar as co-counsel before the Commission of Inquiry investigating his deportation and treatment in Syria. He has taught as an adjunct professor at both Osgoode Hall Law School and the University of Ottawa, and has testified before House of Commons and Senate committees on immigration and national security. In 2017 he was named to the Order of Canada.
