About Laura
Laura Schemitsch is a Canadian immigration and refugee lawyer who has practiced in the field since 2019. She holds a JD from the University of Ottawa and has represented clients before the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada on matters including refusals, humanitarian and compassionate applications, inadmissibility, and judicial reviews. She was called to the Bar of Ontario in 2020 and to the Bar of British Columbia in 2021, and worked in the Sea to Sky region before joining Heron Law Offices in 2023. In November 2022 she was invited to speak before Canada's House of Commons Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration, and her writing has appeared in the CBA National Magazine and the Huffington Post. She began volunteering with sponsorship issues in 2017 through Capital Rainbow Refuge, a group that helps LGBTQIA2S+ asylum seekers.
