Kate Robertson serves as special counsel at Markson Law, where she advises on criminal matters as well as risk and crisis management, governance issues, enforcement matters, and internal or regulatory investigations conducted under frameworks such as financial regulation and privacy laws like PIPEDA. She has run numerous jury and judge-alone criminal trials and has argued cases at every level of court in Canada. Before joining the firm, Kate clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada and worked as both a provincial and a federal prosecutor; she is currently a senior researcher at the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab. She earned her law degree from the University of Toronto with Honours, receiving prizes in business law and jurisprudence, and served as Editor-in-Chief of the university's Journal of International Law and International Relations. Earlier in her career she worked with the United Nations in Cambodia on the Khmer Rouge Tribunal, investigating the regime's surviving leaders. Kate is active in the legal community, having served as a director of Human Rights Watch Canada and having previously chaired The Advocates' Society's group focused on criminal law practice; she continues to sit on committees of the Criminal Lawyers' Association.
