About Kate
Kate is a litigator with experience in private practice, legal aid organizations, civil liberties associations and Indigenous government, having appeared at the Supreme Court of Canada and at all levels of court in Ontario and the Northwest Territories. Her background in criminal defence supports her work on complex strategic, evidentiary and constitutional issues at Ratcliff. She brought a successful constitutional challenge to a mandatory minimum sentence in R. v. Cardinal and led development of the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation's Indigenous Justice Strategy. She has been appointed by the Minister of Justice to act as a special advocate in closed proceedings under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. She earned her J.D. from the University of Toronto in 2009 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2010, the Northwest Territories Bar in 2016, and the British Columbia Bar in 2018.
