About Joseph

Joseph Staples founded the firm that became Staples & Swain. Born in Woodville, Ontario, where his father practised medicine, he earned a Bachelor of Arts at Victoria College, University of Toronto, then served in the Royal Canadian Navy in the North Atlantic from 1941 to 1945, later reaching the rank of Lieutenant-Commander. He attended Osgoode Hall Law School, graduating as a top student in 1948, was called to the Ontario bar that year, and settled in Lindsay, Ontario, where he practised law until his death in 1988.
