Joseph Lexis Crawford Staples, Q.C., founded the firm in 1959 after growing up in nearby Woodville, studying at Victoria College at the University of Toronto, and graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1948. Staples served in the Royal Canadian Navy in the North Atlantic during the Second World War before being called to the Ontario bar in 1948, then practiced law in Lindsay until 1988. Ronald Swain, called to the bar in 1969, partnered with Staples in 1978 and practiced with the firm for more than four decades before retiring; Swain also kept a Tuesday office in Sunderland, giving the firm long standing ties to Brock Township.
Today the firm is run by lawyers Heather Richardson, Angus McNeil, Waylon Skinner, and Nicole Moore, who handle real estate transactions, wills and estate planning and administration, business and corporate matters, and family law for individuals, farms, and businesses across Kawartha Lakes. In January 2023, Staples & Swain opened a second office in Beaverton, taking over the practice of Stephen Woodcock so that Brock Township would keep a local legal resource.
