John C. Stewart grew up in rural Manitoba and earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Manitoba in 1980. He began farming at Poplar Point, Manitoba that year and ran a consulting practice assisting agricultural businesses in financial difficulty, before earning his LLB from the University of Manitoba in 1992 and being called to the bar in 1993. His practice focuses primarily on agriculture and agribusiness, covering corporate and commercial transactions, financing, real estate, and commercial reorganizations. He has taught solicitors' transactions and agriculture law courses at the University of Manitoba, and provides legal services through John Stewart Law Corporation in both English and German.
