About John

John A. Fabello is a partner at Torys who co-heads the firm's Securities Defence Practice and its White Collar Defence and Investigations Practice. His work covers securities litigation, financial services regulatory matters, and complex corporate and commercial disputes, and he represents clients throughout Canada before securities regulators and other financial bodies as well as in court. As lead counsel, he has defended directors and officers of public and private companies, along with financial institutions, in some of Canada's largest securities class actions, including matters involving Sino-Forest and CannTrust. He was seconded for more than a year to a major Canadian broker-dealer to oversee significant class action litigation and related regulatory issues, and he is sometimes retained as a qualified witness on Canadian securities law. His white collar practice also reaches beyond securities work into internal investigations, crisis management, and compliance matters for regulated entities. John sits on the education sub-committee of IIROC's Compliance & Legal Section and the Ontario Securities Commission's Small Business Advisory Committee, and he is a director of the Private Capital Markets Association of Canada. He has also served on the executive of the Ontario Bar Association's Class Actions Law section, the Toronto Lawyers Association, and the Advocates' Society's Securities Litigation Section, and belongs to the American Bar Association and the International Association of Defense Counsel. He regularly speaks and lectures on securities and class action litigation at conferences hosted by groups including the Ontario Bar Association, Insight Information, Federated Press, and the Canadian Institute.
