About Joel

Joel Smith is a partner at Shields O'Donnell MacKillop LLP, where he practices management-side labour, employment and human rights law. He advises both unionized and non-unionized employers on wrongful dismissal, human rights proceedings, restrictive covenants, workplace accommodation, employment agreements and standards, grievance arbitrations, workplace investigations, collective bargaining and occupational health and safety. Joel has represented employers before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Labour Relations Board, labour arbitrators, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal, among other bodies. He regularly presents to employers and HR professionals, including at the Human Resources Professionals Association's annual conference, and his writing has appeared in Canadian Employment Law Today and HR Professional magazine. Joel earned his J.D. from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University, and was called to the Ontario bar in 2015.
