Commercial leasing is the core of Jodey Therriault's work as counsel with Gowling WLG in Waterloo, where Therriault is part of the firm's Real Estate Group. Landlords and tenants both bring their leases to Therriault, on deals that reach right across Canada, and the properties run from industrial and office space to retail and mixed-use sites.

Day to day, that means drafting and negotiating a range of lease documents, from the first offer to lease through renewals, expansions and amendments. Non-disturbance agreements are part of the mix too, and Therriault brings a background in lending to those negotiations. Lease surrenders and terminations are a particular focus. Those talks can get complicated, and Therriault has handled them for landlords and tenants alike.

There's a condo angle as well. Therriault has condominium development experience and advises on leasing commercial space in condo buildings. Corporate clients see another side of the practice: Therriault has handled the real estate piece of transactions such as Connect Hearing's 2024 purchase of a hearing clinic in Newcastle, Ontario, and Gowling WLG's work for Transchem Group and its shareholders.

Therriault aims for a practical, business-minded approach and takes pride in finding creative answers on every leasing file. Called to the Ontario bar in 2010, Therriault holds a JD from Queen's University and a BAS from the University of Guelph.
