About Jeremy Bouchard

Jeremy Bouchard is a partner at Gowling WLG in Ottawa, and Indigenous law sits at the centre of that work. Aboriginal claims and the litigation around them are part of the practice, class actions included. Bouchard has particular experience with specific claims, in both negotiation and litigation.

Called to the Ontario bar in 2006, Bouchard practised as a lawyer with the Department of Justice Canada before moving to Gowling in Ottawa as an associate. By then, Bouchard had built experience as both a litigator and a claims negotiator, and had served as lead counsel on negotiations across the country, the Toronto Purchase Specific Claim among them. On arrival, the work focused on helping First Nations prepare, negotiate and litigate specific claims, along with advice on First Nation economic development.

Bouchard was one of four lawyers heading up Gowling WLG's team as counsel to the plaintiff class in the Federal Indian Day Schools class action. The Federal Court approved that nation-wide settlement for survivors on August 19, 2019.

Outside the practice, Bouchard's roots are Mohawk and Ojibway, and Bouchard proudly belongs to Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation, having also sat as a director of the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation. Academically, a University of Ottawa law degree was followed in 2014 by an Osgoode Hall LLM specializing in administrative law.
